On Performing “Tapestry”

Judy McVerry, Sherry Hickey, Chris Bosch and I performed Carole King’s album Tapestry yesterday at the Lubber Run Community Center. Thanks to all those who attended. It was a great crowd - lot of people sang along.

As usual, we performed the album in order from Side 1 Track 1. I tried to duplicate the piano solos note-for-note - but the guitar and flute and sax solos were rough approximations.

Tapestry remains a much-beloved album: many people were able to harmonize along with us.

There are a few songs that haven’t aged well. “Where You Lead” presumes that the woman singing will happily be subservient to her man (ouch). “Smackwater Jack” is an “upbeat” ditty about a lone gunman who gets lynched in the last verse. With all the mass shootings in recent years, it’s hard to sing this one.

But other songs are timeless… “Will You Still Love Me Tmorrow?” and “I Feel the Earth Move” are real classics.
